Brunch at Canteen

We just discovered that Canteen, the much buzzed about dinner spot (Food & Wine, The San Francisco Chronicle…) long on our must-try list, pocket of a restaurant, serves breakfast throughout the week and brunch on the weekends.

The Perfect Ski Fuel: Brunch at Log Cabin

I love brunch, but it’s so often disappointing. That would never be a problem if only every weekend could start at Log Cabin. This actual log cabin on the water-side in Kings Beach always has a line, but call ahead to get your name on the waiting list. Everything is good, but I especially love the Cajun Benedict. So does Bon Appetit. All of the Benedict variants come with perfectly poached eggs on a light, buttery croissant and a flavorful hollandaise that you know from the crowds hasn’t been sitting around. My only disappointment was discovering that the Special Custard option for the pancakes and waffles isn’t what I usually think of as custard — it more closely resembles the consistency of whipped butter — but it’s still tasty. It’s probably best that I only get to visit Log Cabin when in Tahoe (and it is an awfully good reason to go!), but I can’t help wishing it was closer. If you know of a place that’s nearly as good in the Bay Area without an hour+ line, please let me know!
