Recent First Visits, Exciting and Not

While I’ve often been too busy to stop and write about our seeings and doings of late, I have been quietly checking things off the list.

Though belied by some of my past exuberance, I have often felt a bit uncomfortable writing a review after only one visit. There can be value in capturing an experience tied to a single point in time — that may be one of the true advantages of food blogs vis a vis professional reivews — but so much depends on the day and the company and the moods of all involved that those impressions can be misleading. With that in mind, I’m moving towards answering just one simple (and conveniently short for catching up) question after a first visit: how much do I want to go back?

Vin d’Orange: The Finished Product

Awhile back I told you about the beginning of my first endeavor in house-made liquer. After a month in the cellar and several days for gravity to work its magic with filtration (rushing makes it cloud), we now have several bottles of a surprisingly strong pink liquer. It’s sweeter than I’d like. I wasn’t sure how much sugar to cut when using tart tangerines in place of bitter oranges; the anwer is more than 50 grams. Still, it’s pretty and refreshing and oh so gratifyingly home-made.

Arugula Pesto

I answered my own question: what to do with more greens than I can eat and give away? Make arugula pesto!

I more or less followed my own traditional pesto recipe, substituting pecans for pine nuts and using just enough oil to get to a spreadable consistency. Unlike basil, arugula does not turn brown when cut edges are exposed to air, so this spread stays vibrant green indefinitely.
