I’ve lived in California since 1998. From 2000-2002 I lived in Portola Valley. Other than the restaurant at the bottom of our hill, Woodside was the closest place to go for a meal out. So how is it, I wonder, that it took us until now to eat at The Village Pub?! I could make excuses, but it wouldn’t change anything. We are thoroughly disappointed in ourselves. We have missed out. We will be working to remedy our error with another visit soon. The lesson: do not overlook the places closest to home. They may just be worth traveling for.

I thought I knew some things about Lime: I thought it was relatively new; I thought it was in the Mission; I thought no one I knew had been there, except the friend who recommended it. I thought wrong. Lime has been around for at least a year, maybe more. It’s nowhere near the Mission - it’s on Market in the Castro, a mistake you would never make after seeing the neon fuschia lighting and white banquettes. It’s possible that the friend who recommended it was actually talking about Limon. Most disappointing though in my quest to try somewhere new was Oren’s surprised exclamation, just a few blocks before our arrival, that he had in fact eaten there before!
Despite, or perhaps because of, all of these misconceptions, we ended up at Lime with two good friends on Saturday night. There is no mistaking that the food is actually good. Even more than that, it’s fun. Read the rest of this entry »

An experience in three parts, with pictures.
Part I: In Short
This was a dinner that began well and ended well. It was just the middle section that I found challenging.
Some time ago, I began crossing my personal boundaries in defining the edible. In many cases (e.g., bacon), I’m never going back; in others (e.g., the Sawa lobster that literally walked off the plate as we tried to eat it), the walls have been reinforced. Read the rest of this entry »

I love brunch, but it’s so often disappointing. That would never be a problem if only every weekend could start at Log Cabin. This actual log cabin on the water-side in Kings Beach always has a line, but call ahead to get your name on the waiting list. Everything is good, but I especially love the Cajun Benedict. So does Bon Appetit. All of the Benedict variants come with perfectly poached eggs on a light, buttery croissant and a flavorful hollandaise that you know from the crowds hasn’t been sitting around. My only disappointment was discovering that the Special Custard option for the pancakes and waffles isn’t what I usually think of as custard — it more closely resembles the consistency of whipped butter — but it’s still tasty. It’s probably best that I only get to visit Log Cabin when in Tahoe (and it is an awfully good reason to go!), but I can’t help wishing it was closer. If you know of a place that’s nearly as good in the Bay Area without an hour+ line, please let me know!
