When it first opened I went to Tallulah with a large group of friends of the then chef. We had a wondrous, magical time, we tried everything n the menu, drank ourselves silly, got a kick out of Jerry Hall being on a nearby table and we thought it was wonderful.

Returning a few months later we had a most tiresome time. We discovered the original chef had left and dining for two was no where near as fun as a large group who knew the chef. I was, like you, nonplussed and had no desire to ever return.

Earlier this year - a friend who I could not influence otherwise had his 40th dinner there and so I had to rreturn. Again we were a large group (not friends of the chef). We were treated well and had fun. I did like the lobster dosa on that occasion - but it was the only thing I did care for, and overall, just like you - for some reason this place just fills me with boredome. And I LOVE indian food.

oh well - I think you summed it up exactly right. It is indeed totally unloveable, despite appearances to the contrary.

We've been to Tallula a number of times and have *exactly* the same sentiments. It's good food and makes for a fun evening but doesn't scream "come back."

A current Castro favorite of ours is just across the street from Tallula: Sumi (http://www.sumiinthecastro.com). See Sabine's review: http://amuse-bouche.blogspot.com/2005/07/to-our-friends-at-sumi.html.

Fellow All-In readers: we move to our new home in the Castro at the end of the month. What are your Castro favorites?
